Attorney General Troy King Resigns?

by: mooncat

Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 15:58:23 PM CDT

I just heard from a very reliable source that Troy Boy is resigning as Attorney General.  No report of King's official reason, but the unofficial reason almost certainly involves the rumors swirling around Montgomery that he was recently caught in embarassing misconduct.  The resignation may be enough to keep King's personal life out of the papers, but I don't look for him to run for governor in 2010.

I'm almost sorry to see him go -- Troy was like a caricature of the Republican party.  Never met a death sentence he didn't like, against sexual gratification, publicity hound, etc. ... life as an Alabama blogger will be harder without Troy King.

Not so Fast Troy! (4.00 / 2)

Luckily us bloggers know why he resigned...so he won't be fortunate enough to keep the real reason out of the blogosphere.

I did hear yesterday from a non-media source that he was about to resign. I bet he actually likes all of the other stuff he claims to have hated as well. I'm a little surprised they haven't found any underage boys chained in his dungeon.

I also contend that the blogosphere will suffer when Troy exits stage left. No one was as fun to hate as he was.

You bloggers only hated him . . . (4.00 / 2)

. . . because of his high moral standards, which he not only preaches about (the State engineering), but lives!   You'll see!

Troy King's "resignation" (4.00 / 1)

Ummmmmmmmm...yes. The gay underground has long known for a long time that Troy was a man "fascinated" with "toy boys".

King is like the rest of the Repuke power structure...and that includes our codpiece sporting Occupant. Google Victor Ashe/George W Bush. It reads like a cheap sex novella. Most Repukes are...well, closet cases.

Loretta Nall has a post on Troy (4.00 / 1)

It's hilarious and, if your sensibilities aren't too sensitive, you should give it a look

She's right on target.  The problem isn't the sex, or the gay sex, or whatever kind of kinky personal habits someone in public service happens to have.  The problem is the hypocrisy. To elaborate, in case you don't see the problem, if a public servant earns a position by publicly disparaging some behavior, which he or she secretly engages in, they are subject to considerable influence -- not from the public, but from the handful of people who know about that private behavior.  In the case of the chief law enforcement officer, that influence could take the form of deciding who does and who does not get investigated and/or prosecuted.  That's very dangerous for democracy and not in the public interest one iota.

If you want to hold public office, your public positions and your private activities need to be consistent.  "Be comfortable within your own skin" is another way to say this.

"embarrassing misconduct?" (4.00 / 2)

When it comes to Troy, everything he's said and done as AG has been embarrassing.

Will someone get a little more specific soon?  Is a "wide stance" involved?  Farm animals? Bribes?  What?

Rumor has it... (4.00 / 2)

Troy's wife arrived home unexpectedly and found Troy Boy with an male assistant assisting him...

No police report (4.00 / 2)
No mug shot.  Not as much fun as "Wide Stance" Craig.  But if that rumor is true, you can see how resignation makes sense.  On the other hand, if it's all a big misunderstanding, expect Troy and his family to hold a press conference soon to clear the air.

The message from Troy Boy on the AGO website actually includes this:

"The watch-word of the day here is fidelity - fidelity to the law, fidelity to those we serve, and fidelity to the public trust which you have placed in us."

He never said anything about fidelity to his wife or his faith.

My favorite TBT (ToyBoyTroy) Story / Foreshadowing of Future Scandal (4.00 / 2)

From the Google cache of the Press Register 1/6/08:

" ...his version of "My Elusive Dreams," a tune he recorded in 1984 but never released -- until King was provided a copy by one of Cash's former producers.

King 39, rewrote a few of the song's lyrics and added his vocals to create a duet with Cash, who died in 2003 after an acclaimed music career.

King sent about 25 copies of the recording to friends and supporters as a Christmas gift. A copy of the CD was provided to the Press-Register.

King declined to comment on the recording through his chief of staff, Chris Bence. But on the CD's liner notes, King wrote, "If every man has at least one song inside him, this is mine!"

Enough said.

Montgomery Advertiser yet to confirm story (4.00 / 2)
Sources at the Montgomery Advertiser say that they have been sitting on the story for a couple of weeks.  They're working the story fast and furiously but won't run until they get official confirmation due to possible exposure to a lawsuit from King.  Their sources tell them that Troy King was caught in a compromising situation with a male aide at King's home by his wife.  The Montgomery Advertiser is trying to determine who King would submit his resignation to - is it Gov. Bob Riley?  A press release from King's office stated that he was supposed to be in Mobile yesterday (Wednesday).  The Mobile-Register is working the story as well.  Other sources say that he's at Point Clear in Fairhope attending the District Attorney's conference.

He was not at Point Clear (4.00 / 2)

However as I was told, Troy and the District Attorney's have no love for each other based on that ordeal from last year. So it is no surprise that they did not see him. Yet, he is very close to Victim Services Organization and shows up for all of their events which he did not yesterday.

There was no chatter at the DA's conference yesterday about this though.

Many / most of the DAs in Alabama (4.00 / 3)

are smart, savvy, battle-hardened attorneys.  I've known and have sparred with, argued against, compromised with and called many of them friends, and adversaries.

Such people generally tend to take a dim, dim view of none-too-intelligent brats who politically wheedle their way into higher office.

[ Parent ]
DAs don't hold Troy in high esteem (4.00 / 3)

That became painfully obvious in last year's dust-up when King removed DA Robby Owens from a case.

A statement from the Alabama District Attorneys Association, regarding Troy King's action in that case:

[T]he Attorney General has seen fit to wrongfully lash out at this respected district attorney who has been prosecuting criminals most of his adult life. This Attorney General, not having one time stood in the pit, in front of a jury and judge, in the presence of a victim's and defendant's family members, in front of his God, to ask that a life be taken, now feels qualified to declare that a prosecutor who has done so many, many times has now "shirked" his responsibility and is in league with the murderer himself. To publicly assert that District Attorney Owens was in anyway deficient in his responsibilities to his constituents and the victims' families is unfair, disingenuous and, quite frankly, sickening.

You know, when DAs . . . (4.00 / 2)

Why did Bob Riley pick Troy? (0.00 / 0)

He was Bob Riley's legal advisor at the time of his appointment:

Professional Experience:
Legal Advisor, Governor Bob Riley, 2003-2004
Assistant Attorney General, 1999-2003
Deputy Executive Secretary, 1997-1999
Acting Executive Secretary, 1997
Deputy Legal Advisor, 1995-1997
Legal Advisor, 1995.

That experience looks pretty thin to be made Attorney General for the state of Alabama.  I've been told that Rob Riley has a lot of influence on appointments, especially those of people in his generation.  Were Troy and Rob school chums or anything?

Different Generations (4.00 / 2)

King is a mystery.  Reilly's actually had more-or-less good cabinet picks.  It was Reilly who got caught in the crosshairs of the Christian (sic) Coalition for proposing to do something rather Christian in the first year of his first term:  ending Alabama's horrifically regressive tax system.  Reilly's a Republican through-and-through, but he's not a jingoist or loony-toon; King's both, and more.

So, yes, I'm surprised Reilly can stand to be in the same room as King, let alone take any advice from such a craven chucklehead.

So says Danny at Doc's Political Parlor.  His sources are "GOP power broker Steve (pee in a jar) Windom and "Chris Brown who has worked with King".

State GOP Communications Director Philip Bryan tells the Parlor, “I haven’t heard any plans that he is going to resign.”

I spoke to Chris Bence today.  He said that he was not "confirming or denying" anything.  His official statement was "We do not respond to rumors".

My father, a Democrat and powerful criminal defense attorney who was also the attorney for the Republican state party in Illinois, always advised "Deny, deny, deny".

Perhaps Mr. Bence knows Scott McClellan's literary agent.
