State Democratic Party Diversity Amendment Round II On Saturday

by: countrycat

Thu Jan 30, 2014 at 07:55:50 AM CST

Montgomery, AL February 1, The State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) will meet this Saturday, February 1st at 11AM. The meeting will be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery.

An amendment to insert Democratic National Committee language on diversity into the state Party’s bylaws has been submitted. Proponents of the amendment say it will ensure the Alabama Democratic Party joins the national party and welcomes all Alabamians into its tent.

SDEC member and sponsor of the amendment, Amy Shadoin of Madison County said, “The Alabama Democratic Party’s State Executive Committee is underrepresenting several groups including Hispanic, Native American, Asian, Youth, and other minority communities.  It is time for the Alabama Democratic Party to mirror the national party’s stance regarding inclusivity and to give these diverse demographic groups in Alabama a voice in our state Party.”

Advocates for the amendment have started an online petition with several hundred signatures to voice their support of an expanded definition of diversity and to call for the state party to allow debate and a vote.

Under the current ADP bylaws many key minority voter constituencies in Alabama have no guaranteed representation on the State Democratic Executive Committee. Should the proposed amendment pass, it will ensure that the ADP speaks for the broadest range of Alabama voters.

Similar diversity amendments have been sponsored at past SDEC meetings, but they were tabled without debate or a vote.

The SDEC meeting is open to all Alabama Democrats.

Note: This is from a press release distributed by diversity amendment supporters.

I've not received a copy (3.50 / 2)
of the proposed amendment (yet) and as a member of the SDEC, I should have. Did it get submitted by 1/22/14?

I've got three tools in my arsenal: my voice, my wallet and my vote.

Good question! (0.00 / 0)
The sponsor is from my county committee.  I'll check!

Diversity Amendment (0.00 / 0)

The amendment was emailed to Nancy and to the party addresses on the 21st (delivery receipt received from Nancy's personal account, but no open receipt ever came back), faxed the morning of the 22nd, and sent certified mail as well.  Nancy wasn't in the office on the 22nd (the DEADLINE…!) and apparently didn't check in, and her office person gave it to her on the 23rd.  Nancy says she didn't have it in hand in time for it to count...

So she is porposing that the committee vote on whether to take it up.

Tell me something:  As an SDEC member, did you receive notice of the actual meeting?  When did you receive it?  We are aware of several all over the state who have not received notice of the meeting, let alone the amendment.  It came to party chairs, but not SDEC members...

is there a copy of the proposed amendment available? (0.00 / 0)

I've heard that it's different than the one the committee considered (or actually DIDN'T CONSIDER) in October of last year.

I'd like to see a copy of the new one.

I hope it's different (4.00 / 1)
Otherwise we will be voting to pull the October amendments off the table, and that would include Dr. Reed's disenfranchising amendment.

I did get a meeting notice (4.00 / 1)
along with an invitation to the J-J dinner, which last I heard, STILL did not have a speaker
