Taking Back the People's House

by: mpmarus

Folks, the news about Jim Barton resigning his legislative seat is all over - even here at LiA.

What's not being mentioned is that this is a prime opportunity for us to get a head start on defeating the super majority held by the GOP in the Statehouse.

See, we all know that Barton is a Republican - so if a Democrat wins that seat, when they run again they have the advantage of being the incumbent. Remember, we need 5 additional seats in the House to defeat the super majority and win back a place at the table. Do the math - this one's easy.

mpmarus :: Taking Back the People's House
Our illustrious governor set qualifying for this race to end Monday, August 19 - right during the build-up to the Mobile city elections (the district is in Mobile County). But I'm sure that was an accident, right?

More transparent was Bentley later announcing a change in the actual election dates - from October 8 to October 15. Maybe he was hoping the Democrats would be confused and stay home?

The Republicans know we're committed to crashing their party at the Statehouse, and they're doing what they can to make sure that stays a GOP seat.

We need a candidate - someone who can not only win this seat, but hold it in 2014. There's help - the Alabama Democratic Majority announced helping defeat the super majority as one of its 5 goals at their Convention earlier this month, so there's statewide support as well as local. What we need is that special person to step up and run.

Not all readers of LiA live in South Alabama, of course, or even in Alabama at all. But all of us know folks who live in other places. Tap your Mobile connections. Qualifications for office are at the Alabama Legislature site, but basically candidates must be at least 21, have been residing in Alabama at least 3 years, and must live in the district. Check the district using the "Find Your Legislator" tool

If you do know someone interested in qualifying, have them text or email main@mobiledems.org and include a contact phone number.

chip, chip, chip.... (2.00 / 1)

The GOP didn't win a majority in a single election: they'd been working on it for multiple cycles.  While we do have a chance to break the tyranny of the supermajority in 2014, it will take longer than that to regain a Democratic majority.

That work starts here, folks!  One election at a time.

To paraphrase JFK: (4.00 / 2)

We will do these things "not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

District 93 will be contested next year as well! By another physician no less, a veteran and a mother. She should be able to give ol' Steve Clouse a proper fight:

Ding! Ding! First time comment here! (0.00 / 0)

Welcome to Left in Alabama!

btw... I keep reading your screen name - toecutter - and shuddering because it sounds painful.  Would love to hear the backstory on that one!

Anyway, welcome to the conversation!  Please hang out, comment, and write your own diaries about issues you're knowledgable and passionate about.  If you have any problems, please contact an admin for help.  But be patient, please: we're swamped right now with gardens, paid work, etc.  It may take a day or two to respond.

And if you're a Marsden volunteer, we'd love to have you do an interview - print or video - and post it here so the candidate can introduce herself to the LIA community.

Stay in touch and again, Welcome to LIA!

Toecutter origin... (4.00 / 1)

Name was actually my call sign in Iraq and originates from the movie Mad Max. I ended up with it because of a high number ingrown toenails we had to operate on the first month of that deployment.

I will speak to the campaign manager for Dr. Marsden. How should they get in touch with you?

Woops... (4.00 / 1)
I need to apologize - evidently the GOP tactic of sowing confusion by changing the dates for the special election worked - I had the wrong qualifying deadline - it's actually August 26

Candidates qualifying with major political parties must do so by Monday, August 26, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.
