Will The Republican Party Accept Bobby Jindal's Advice & "Stop Being Stupid?"

Ladies & Gentlemen!  We have a new contender for "best headline of 2013."  This entry comes from Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal: Jindal Urges GOP to Stop Being "Stupid."  Republican Party

“We must compete for every single vote: the 47 percent and the 53 percent and any other combination of numbers that adds up to 100 percent,” he said, notably invoking comments 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made at a closed door fundraiser about a bloc of voters who would not consider GOP candidates.
[...]
Republicans “must reject the notion that demography is destiny, the pathetic and simplistic notion that skin pigmentation dictates voter behavior. We must treat all people as individuals rather than as members of special interest groups,” he said.

It's a great headline to a bit of a fawning article overall that includes laugh-out-loud lines like this:

The Louisianan’s remarks further positioned himself as a forward-looking voice among the Republicans thought to have their eye on a White House bid in 2016.

Really?  I guess that works if you define "forward-looking" as pushing a plan to kick old people & the poor out of hospice care - and then changing the plan after it got too much criticism.  And also if you define "forward-looking" as proposing to eliminate corporate and individual state income taxes and further burden the poor & middle class by raising what is already the nation's 3rd highest highest sales tax rate. That's a move the Tax Policy Center reports "would dramatically shift more of the burden of Louisiana’s taxes onto lower-income individuals."

But hey, at least Jindal's not suggesting jailing raped women who have abortions because they "tampered with evidence" in a criminal trial (PDF link to the Arizona New Mexico bill).

That's really stupid.

There are oh so many reasons Jindal's comments are ironic (4.00 / 1)
Jindal has signed measures that undermine the teaching of science and support teaching that the Earth is six thousand years old.  He pushes educational "reforms" such as vouchers and charter schools, measures that do nothing to improve public education, only to take money out of public education and put it into (possibly religious) privately operated schools.  This despite an Ivy League education in biology.  I think the best that can be said of his "don't be stupid" remarks is that he knows first hand what it is to make stupid statements and pass stupid laws.

one of our FB comments was pretty apt (4.00 / 1)
While that's what Bobby said, that isn't really what he meant. He doesn't mean that they should stop BEING stupid, he just wants them to stop SOUNDING stupid. His own administration in Louisiana demonstrates his personal resolve to BEING stupid.

Is stupid baked in their cake? (4.00 / 1)
I'll not hold my breath. I know or read some good, authentic conservatives who loathe the appoach this bunch keeps taking. But I've also been saddened by some, whom I once thought rational and decent, devolving into Beckerheads far too often.

I might have mentioned "Little Red State Fundy" before, but it's always worth a visit. Seriously, even sane Republicans have to engage in crazy base land talk to hinder a primary challenge from farther out on the fringes.

Also, how the modern GOP has constructed and used their counter-intellegentsia and message machine can't be ignored. Hackery out of the policy shops pays pretty good money, especially if you can climb up the ladder and/or get into the writing and speaking channels. Even at low levels, there's wingnut welfare for even a minimally competent partisan. And we know they've sold their souls to Rush Limbaugh and others of his ilk. Then again, I keep reading how right wing talk radio is consolidating and shedding Limbaughettes. Diving and distracting the commoners is a tried and true tactic. After all, we know how often we're getting hosed. The yellers and fearmongers keep Joe and Jill Sixpack from looking up.

And I also have long argued that the last thing Alabama has lacked up on Goat Hill is conservative approaches. We've had a few periods where populism via Kolb and Folsom and Brewer held some sway. At other times, a few "business progressive" sorts at least could knock the rough edges of some of the reactionary stuff. I miss old school conservatives and actually think we need them. The modern GOP is becoming so bent that I often worry that we risk tipping someplace dangerous if and when their sheeple have the wool pulled from their eyes.
