| Less than 2 years after Congressman Mo Brooks held town meetings with Alabama tornado victims to help residents get the benefits they were "entitled" to, Brooks decided that Hurricane Sandy victims are entitled to.... nothing. At least, that's how he voted today on the Sandy relief package that Speaker Boehner finally brought to the floor. Brooks was joined by 67 fellow nihilists Republicans and was the only Alabama representative to vote NO. Truly, his hypocrisy can only be measured on a galactic scale. Remember in September 2011 Brooks was happy to hold FEMA funding hostage because after all... we got ours. U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R) said most of the FEMA money for north Alabama storm victims had already been distributed, minimizing the local impact of any potential shutdown.
Now, let's consider this.... Perhaps Congressman Brooks thinks that North Alabama will never suffer another natural disaster? Has he developed some super-secret tornado stopping device? Does he think that his fellow representatives from Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, West Virginia, and other states affected by the largest, most destructive storm on record have short memories? Don't count on that last one. In a perfect world, we'd all act in the best interest of the country and our fellow citizens. If empathy doesn't work though, how about sheer practicality? My Congressman apparently has neither. I find it hard to believe that Brooks hasn't damaged his relationship with his Northeastern & Mid-Atlantic counterparts. AL-05 is a district extraordinarly dependent on federal largesse - as is all of Alabama, in fact. After this stunt, I bet that even Steve Raby's lobbying skills won't dig Brooks and AL-05 out of this hole anytime soon. |
