Constitutional Revision Commission to Hold Public Hearing On Dec. 3rd

After the Amendment 4 debacle, it's important for the constitutional reform movement to get back on track as soon as possible.  The Constitutional Revision Commission will be tackling the Education Article of the 1901 Alabama Constitution next spring and is working on the Legislative Article now.  They will hold a public hearing on this article beginning at 10 am on December 3rd in room 617 of the Alabama State House in Montgomery.

I want a new and improved constitution as much as anyone, but just could not hold my nose and vote for Amendment 4 (which removed racist language from the 1901 document) because of the uncertainty it created with regard to the state's obligation to provide public education for all children.  That's a problem with revising this confusing and lengthy document piecemeal -- when you change one thing over here, it impacts something else a few hundred pages away and the fear of repercussions takes over.

In the case of Amendment 4, I wasn't willing to "just trust" the Commission and the Legislature to fix the new problem later on.  As I've said many times before, our legislators are sitting pretty under the 1901 Constitution, they're the last people I would trust to modernize it.

Please take an active part in the constitutional reform process, to whatever extent you can.
