Saturday News Roundup & Open Thread

No garden blogging today since the freeze earlier this week took out the remaining tomato & pepper plants, but there's plenty of stuff to discuss.  Here are a few things that caught my eye this morning: feel free to jump in with your own topics.

First, aren't these the cutest trick or treaters ever?

Cutest trick or treat ever

These little guys aren't at all scary, but this next story sure is.  Rupert Murdoch took to Twitter to warn NJ governor Chris Christie to stop talking nice about President Obama or "take blame."

A number of prominent conservatives have worried that Christie's newfound appreciation for the president could prove to be a decisive liability to Romney's presidential campaign. Rush Limbaugh, for one, attacked Christie during his show on Wednesday as Obama's "Greek column."

It remains to be seen whether Christie, who has presidential ambitions of his own, will alter course in response to conservative blowback. The governor has already dismissed the suggestion that he make a new push for Romney, saying, "If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics, then you don't know me."

Two things jumped out at me specifically:

  1. The idea that Gov. Christie should take time from overseeing hurricane recovery in his state and hit the campaign trail for Romney.
  2. The demands that Christie go on the attack against the very same federal agency & officials who are bringing relief to the people in his state.

That's the Republican philosophy of "governance" in a nutshell.  The job be damned.  The people you swore to serve be damned.  Murdoch, Limbaugh, & company instead demand obedience to the big money & dark money masters.  In that view, a candidate/governor's real job is to salute & ask "how high, Sir?" when the puppermasters snap their imperious fingers and say "jump!"

And finally, hats off to Ralph Giles, Chrysler Head of Product Design, who spoke the truth to Donald Trump in the plainest way possible:

Trump, from his Twitter account, said, "Obama is a terrible negotiator. He bails out Chrysler and now Chrysler wants to send all Jeep manufacturing to China--and will!"

To which Gilles, from his Twitter account, responded to Trump: "You are full of shit!"

In a second Tweet, Giles added: "I apologize for my language, but lies are just that, lies."

Yep.  Romney's whole campaign is built on a shifting sand of constantly changing positions.  If he & his surrogates didn't lie, they'd have nothing at all to say.

What's up in your corner of the world this morning?

Speaking of Chris Christie (4.00 / 3)

There's a story in Politico (h/t to docstymie at the Orange) about how he was Rmoney's first choice for VP.

Now, campaign insiders tell POLITICO that Christie was Mitt Romney’s first choice for the Republican ticket, lending an intriguing new context to the continuing drama around the Garden State governor.

Also, too: BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Murdoch isn't much of a people person, is he? (4.00 / 2)

I just don't think it could be any more obvious that Christy isn't talking to the likes of Rupert Murdoch and political America. He's relaying the people of New Jersey that the differences between left & right will remain on the shelf until an acceptable amount of normalcy returns to his state.

I can just see Christy on the campaign trail with Romney & Ryan at rallies with people holding up signs that say:

GO THE F*** HOME AND HELP YOUR PEOPLE!!!

Well, Christie had some incentive here (4.00 / 1)

Don't forget that it was just about 2 years ago that the state of New Jersey was hit by a massive snow storm (up to 31 inches in places) and Gov Christie was vacationing with his family in Disney World.  And, just for more fun, Christie had already been advised that the storm was on its way but he put family fun over the state's needs.  There was a LOT of outrage at Christie's decision (especially when Christie defended the vacation as having been a "gift" to his daughter and his family came first).

On top of that little fiasco, the state's Lieutenant Governor (a post that had just been created in 2006 but not implemented until the 2009 elections with the first Lt Gov taking office in Jan 2010) was vacationing in Mexico--at the same time.

Had Christie been out of the state during Sandy--especially if he'd been campaigning for Romney--the man would've never been able to get back into the state and ANY hopes he might have had of becoming President in 2016 would be down the toilet.  Presuming he runs for governor again in 2013, he's going to have a tough run if the 2010 blizzard is brought up.

Christy (4.00 / 2)
I have gained a new respect for Chrisy. If there is a politician out there who has credibility other than Obama it has to be Christy. Maybe Obama will pick him for a cabinet level position!

538 (4.00 / 2)
Fivethirtyeight has Obama with a comfortable lead and everything is looking good. Now I am worried about whether the election can be stolen away. Anyone else worried about this?

always! n/t (4.00 / 2)

Voter turnout (4.00 / 2)
The weather and driving/walking conditions in battleground states is my concern. One pair of snow shoes could be the deciding factor. :-/

Alabama heroes in the Sunshine State (4.00 / 4)
I have been working with a group from Alabama who are helping out down here.  One is from Huntsville, and I told her to look y'all up.  Her name is Ali White, pretty young lady with a passion for Obama.
