| Republican candidate Twinkle Cavenaugh is a tool for Big Coal:
Cavanaugh sits beside [Democrat Lucy] Baxley when the state's utility regulatory board meets each month, and her vote counts as much as Baxley's. But she wants to slide over one seat, which would allow her to preside at meetings and give her a more prominent platform to speak out on issues. She said she will use it to step up her criticism of the Environmental Protection Agency. "They are doing their best to put our most abundant resource, which is coal, out of business. If Obama and the current EPA were able to get their way, they'd have it out of business and drive up our costs in Alabama," she said. Twinkle wants to move up to PSC president so she can better criticize the mean old EPA for its efforts to clean up coal. In case you missed this statistic, a single coal-fired power plant in Greene County kills about 100 Alabamians a year. That's just deaths due to pollution; it doesn't factor in the dangers to workers (coal mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in America) or the long term environmental effects of burning coal. Current PSC President Lucy Baxley (D) is no raging environmentalist, but she's also not Big Coal's bought and paid for tool, and she has the experience and smarts to see through the clever sales pitches of Big Coal, Big Oil, Big Telecom and the other "Bigs" who profit off our need for energy, communication and other public services. When utilities come before the PSC with requests you can count on Lucy to consider Alabama's need to protect our air and water as well as our need for cheap energy. And she doesn't believe environmental protection is public enemy number 1, as Twinkle seems to. So what do you need to know about the race for PSC president? #1, vote for Lucy Baxley on Nov. 6th so Big Coal doesn't own the whole PSC. #2, contribute to Lucy Baxley now because you know Big Coal is putting their money on Twinkle. |
