|  The deadline for candidates to qualify for the vacancy on the Democratic ballot has passed and the Alabama Democratic Party just announced that Judge Robert Vance will stand as the Democratic Party’s candidate for Chief Justice this November.
"We are thrilled that Judge Vance has stepped forward and will be our candidate for Chief Justice this November,” said Mark Kennedy, chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party. “Judge Vance is an incredibly well respected judge who will serve us proudly in the upcoming election and, most importantly, serve all the people of Alabama on the court."
Vance was the only candidate to qualify after the original nominee, Harry Lyon, was removed from the ballot last Friday. The ADP press release provided this information on Judge Robert Vance, Jr.'s career.
Over the past decade, Judge Vance has become one of the most respected jurists in the state while serving as a civil circuit court judge in Jefferson County. Prior to this, Judge Vance practiced law with the Birmingham firm of Johnston, Barton, Proctor, & Powell, L.L.P. and clerked for Hon. Tom McGee on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is a graduate of Princeton University (1982) and the University of Virginia School of Law (1985). He lives in Birmingham with his wife, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Joyce Vance, and their four children. “The people of Alabama can feel confident that Judge Vance would lead the court with the rule of law in mind rather than politics,” said Kennedy. “We are proud he is our candidate and the people of Alabama will be proud to have him as Chief Justice.” Judge Bob Vance's facebook page is here. Election Day is less than 11 weeks away. Per the Alabama Canons of Judicial Ethics, Judge Vance can't solicit campaign contributions himself. Birmingham, AL 35202 ... and ask your friends, family and neighbors to send him some love, too, ASAP. Don't just limit yourself to asking known Democrats to support Vance, either. An awful lot of Republicans aren't happy with the idea of handing our court system back over to Roy Moore. Let them know they now have a qualified alternative to Moore in Judge Bob Vance. |
